Description
This rare and whimsical late 19th-century French novelty ‘quarterdeck’ mantel clock was crafted by Guilmet, Paris. It features an eight-day gong-striking movement with anchor escapement and a circular gilt Roman numeral dial with steel spade hands.
The case is designed to resemble the stern of a ship. The upper deck showcases a binnacle compass before a sailor figure at the helm, who rocks side-to-side with the motion of the pendulum. Lantern posts adorn both sides, and a lower deck is accessible by ladder on the left. To the right, another mariner figure is depicted gathering rope.
All of this sits atop a moulded gilt base mounted onto a black marble plinth with gilt block feet. This piece is an exceptional example of Andre Romain Guilmet’s celebrated industrial and mystery clocks — mechanical sculptures that blur the line between function and fantasy.
