📜 A highly rare Royal manuscript signed by Queen Elizabeth I in 1591.
A museum-quality display piece that would grace any world-class collection.
Elizabeth I (1533–1603) reigned as Queen of England for 44 years, from 1558 until 1603. She was the daughter of King Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn, ascending the throne at age 25.
She famously stated: “I know I have the body of a weak and feeble woman, but I have the heart and stomach of a king...”
Known as ‘Gloriana’ or ‘The Virgin Queen’, Elizabeth devoted her life to her country. Her reign marked a Golden Age of English history, with peace, exploration, prosperity, and cultural brilliance, including the rise of Shakespeare.
In 1588, her navy led by Sir Francis Drake defeated the Spanish Armada. Sir Walter Raleigh began colonizing the Americas. Elizabeth I remains one of history’s most iconic women.
The Document
The manuscript measures 10.5" x 8" and is in superb condition. It retains crisp edges, faint folds, minor age staining, and its original wafer seal with a secondary red wax court seal — a remarkable rarity.
Elizabeth signs with her famous large flourish across the top third of the document.
Dated April 29, 1591, the royal warrant was issued to John Fortescue, Chancellor of the Exchequer. It commands the delivery of ceremonial garments to Anthony Wingfield Esquire, a new member of the Order of the Garter (England’s highest chivalric order, founded in 1348).
