John Lennon (1940–1980) was a founding member of The Beatles, the most successful pop group in history. He formed a legendary songwriting partnership with Paul McCartney, penning many of the band’s biggest hits.
Following the Beatles’ split, Lennon became the most successful solo artist of the group. Ranked 8th in the BBC’s 100 Greatest Britons and 5th greatest singer of all time by Rolling Stone, Lennon remains the most collected Beatle globally.
This is believed to be the only lock of John Lennon’s hair currently available on the market.
Historical Background
The lock was cut in September 1966 in preparation for Lennon’s role in the film How I Won the War.
It comes with a photocopy of Lennon’s signed call sheet and a Certificate of Authenticity from Heritage Auctions, who originally sold the lot in March 2016.
The hair was trimmed in Hamburg, Germany, by hairdresser Klaus Baruck just before Lennon began filming. He portrayed Gripweed in Richard Lester’s dark comedy about a fictional British troop in WWII.
Included is a photocopy of the original 8.5 x 11 inch call sheet, dated September 6, 1966. It features a signature in blue ink that reads: "John Lennon / oh yes".
Lennon also began wearing his iconic round glasses for this role — a look he kept for the rest of his life.
This haircut occurred one month after the release of the landmark album Revolver and just 8 days after the Beatles' final live concert at Candlestick Park.
This lock symbolizes the transition from Beatlemania to the studio-focused period that produced Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.
