Description

Europe was an inexhaustible source of inspiration for the New World until the 1940s. It embodied elegance and the avant-garde in culture, architecture, and fashion.

During the 1930s and 1940s, the American aristocracy—who held the reins of power, money, and good taste, centered in the Upper East Side and Fifth Avenue—commissioned works from the most talented French interior designers. Jean-Michel Franck and Emilio Terry decorated the private apartments and offices of New York's elite, inspiring such disciples as Dorothy Draper.

Breaking with the clean lines of Art Deco, these artists created a sophisticated world blending 16th century Spanish Baroque, 18th century French Classicism, and the surrealism of the time. Intertwined curlicues, arabesques, and symbolic motifs restored the glorious reputation of the decorative arts. Mirrors, bronze, marble, and lacquer were the precious and shimmering materials used for this ornamental architecture.

S.T. Dupont created the limited edition New York 5th Avenue to pay tribute to both the unique city of New York and the famed interior designers, ambassadors of French Art de vivre. Lucien Tissot-Dupont was invited by Louis Cartier to sell his precious travel cases at Cartier’s 5th Avenue store, affirming his place among these esteemed ambassadors.

Drawing inspiration from the ornamental and baroque style of this decorative trend, the lighters and pens in this limited edition are decorated with golden grids. The arabesques subtly reference both Raymond Subes' ironwork and Atlas, the figure at the base of Rockefeller Center.

The taupe and chocolate lacquer echo the color palette used in apartments designed by these artists, reflecting the refined and discreet ambiance of their interiors.

The lighters and pens are individually numbered up to 1929—marking the year of Lucien Tissot-Dupont’s first journey to New York.
